In the series Pat Crowe (Cert Ed, RGN) played Matron.
She is a real life Matron at Bramcote Lorne School in Retford Nottinghamshire and is also director of Boarding.
She is highly thought of by the pupils both of Kings School in the series and those from Bramcote Lorne. This is borne out by the letter and hugs she received at the end of the series and the fact many of the pupils are still in regular contact with her.

She easily maintained discipline and was astute enough to be able to sense when relations were getting strained between various pupils.

This can be confirmed as not just acting by the report of the INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS INSPECTORATE (ISI) on 3-7 February 2003, for Bramcote Lorne School, which said

"The director of boarding and her husband provide a very high level of care and create a calm and friendly atmosphere in the boarding areas. There is little evidence of bullying or teasing. The pupils are happy and at ease in the pleasant atmosphere in the school. Staff are well aware of current health and safety requirements. Pupils who are unwell are properly cared for by the director of boarding who is a qualified nurse. Very popular evening activities are organised for boarders. The food is nourishing and well presented but some older pupils would like larger portions. Effective child protection measures are in place."
